Former lead singer Mick Thomas continues the tradition with his annual Christmas show at the Corner Hotel. It was close to a full house for the second of this year's shows. The Sure Thing were supported by James McCann and the Aerial Maps, from Sydney. Lead singer Adam Gibson finishing off the set with a beer in hand. While we waited for the band to come on our ears were assulted by a series of rock n' roll Christmas carols. I'm glad that only happens once a year. Emerging on a stage decorated with tinsel, The Sure Thing played a set of old classics and new numbers. I'm not particularly familiar with th Weddings' back catalogue, but I was in a minority. It seemed that the rest of the audience knew every word of the old Weddings' songs. Monday's Experts was the third song in, coming after a story from Mick about a radio appearance the previous week which coincided with the Ben Cousins story. This caused parts of the crowd to go crazy and Mick to point out that it was people like that that made him move the radio appearance to the next day once the story had blown over. The band had a great sound. Drummer Michael Barclay played a jazz kit and joined Mick on harmonies. Tired Little Shop, from the Sure Thing's Paddock Buddy album, featured Rory (the double bass player) on tin whistle. Trumpet & mandolin also made an appearance on a couple of songs. Step in, Step Out particularly missed the female part, but was helped along by the crowd. A rendition of 'For a Short Time' was introduced as a song about a woman that the band had known only briefly. This song seemed to inspire male bonding, with large groups of guys standing with their arms around each other for the duration of the song. The one hour set stretched out to 2 hours, with no end to the hits being played.
